I am available for talks
How would you like to hear the story of my unassisted solo sail around the world – no technology, no support, just pure grind and adventure?
Solo around the world - with no modern technology
My Golden Globe Race campaign in 2022 was an amazing experience. Any circumnavigation is a challenge, but to do it non-stop and without any modern technology or communication devices is especially challenging. My campaign did not go quite as I had hoped for as due to a poor application of my antifouling paint, I was forced to make a three-day stop in Hobart, Tasmania to rid my hull of a massive barnacle infestation. Effectively this put me out of contention in the main race and I was moved to a different race class for entrants that made a single stop during the circumnavigation.
It was a true test of character
Out of the 16 starters of the 2022 Golden Globe Race, there were only five official finishers, three in the Suhaili Class and two in the Chichester Class. I took 278 days to complete my race. This is a lot of time to spend totally alone at sea. A lot of time to contemplate one’s mortality and the meaning of life! I faced many challenges that, had I known about them before the start, I may never have embarked on the venture.
I faced conditions at sea that resulted in serious damage to my boat and I had to make plans to repair and continue racing. Giving up was not an option although at times it was very tempting.
